How Ergonomic Office Chairs Promote Good Posture

If you don’t look after our own body, you will indeed suffer. Unfortunately, it could be that you haven’t been looking after your body for quite some time before the signs of your misdeeds show up. In today’s heavily computerised world, workers spend a lot of time sitting down, bending over desks, clicking at keyboards and slouching. It’s now time to think of putting the situation right! Let’s look at a few of the ‘unhealthy’ conditions that could build up after a while. If you know what could happen, maybe you’ll realise that prevention is better than cure.

There’s a bad back, a painful neck and shoulders and there’s RSI, that repetitive strain injury that comes from making the same hand movements regularly and over a long period of time. I’m going to call these the ‘more obvious’ problems.

But then there are other conditions that you might not realise can come from slouching or any other shape of bad posture. There’s vertigo, which can come from you not holding your head at an eye-to-monitor horizontal angle. Looking high or looking low can cause problems with the neck which, unlike ordinary neck ache, can bring on a lack of balance, a drunken-like disorientation and extreme sickness.

There’s also a chance of stomach problems and organ disorders, as slouching means that your stomach and organs are fighting for space in your reduced torso and crushing your life equipment for several hours a day isn’t going to extend your years, is it?

Need I go on?

Okay, so supporting your body, getting your shoulders up there where they should be, giving your lower back a comfortable hug with the support elements of a good ergonomic office chair, adjusting the chair height and also adjusting the tilt of both the seat pad and chair back to make sure your thighs are fully supported and your feet happily touch the floor, now all makes sense, doesn’t it?

But let’s not forget your arms and hands. A good ergonomic office chair will offer all-singing and all-dancing armrests which, with three way adjustments (back and forward, up and down and also in and out), will make sure there is no pressure on your shoulder or upper arm and that your lower arm and hand glide towards that all-important keyboard, ready to tap away the day.

If it was up to you to go and find the right ergonomic office chair, you might flounder, as you haven’t built up any experience in finding the right chair. Hopefully, if you first chair is the right one, you won’t be building up any of that aforementioned experience either, as your chair should last a very long time!

The chairs to look at are the Ergohuman, the Ergohuman Plus, Nefil, Enjoy and the Mirus. Each comes in the ever popular mesh upholstery and in a range of off-the-beaten track colours. If you’re going to sit in a chair for eight hours a day, taking into consideration of course that you should give your eyes a rest from that computer screen several times during your working hours, the breathable mesh fabric will help you stay fresh and cool and the colour, well, the colour makes you feel good and personalises that five wheeled-vehicle which, as you work, will be riding with all your twists and turns.

What more can I say?

Why Have a Height-adjustable Ergonomic Desk?

Ergonomics is all about choosing something that fits the individual. Similar to choosing a suit or a pair of jeans, if the item feels good, then so do you. That’s why ergonomic desks come in all shapes and sizes, taking on board the person and the responsibilities of the job.

The height of a desk or table normally falls within 24 and 27 inches and, with an ergonomic chair, the set-up should be that the user’s lower arms lie horizontally on the armrests, to meet the desk comfortably. But a chair is height adjustable, meaning that if a tall person is sitting in the ergonomic chair, there may be little clearance for the legs under the desk and the forearms may be on a downward slope, as they reach the keyboard. It therefore makes sense that desks are also height-adjustable.

So, when the ergonomic chair and the height-adjustable desk come together, they should be covering the following points:-

• the legs slide comfortably under the desk and the person’s feet sit firmly on the floor (someone with restricted growth may make use of an ergonomic footrest, to achieve ideal posture)

• the forearms are positioned horizontally, using the armrests for full support, so that hands meet the desk comfortably, without any need to bend the wrists unnaturally

• the monitor is placed directly in front of the user but set back at least 20 inches and its height should be such that the eyes look down ever so slightly, to read the screen. Some ergonomic desks have an extra shelf attached to the back of the desk top, on which a monitor can stand, though getting the eye-to-screen mathematics right is paramount, when making a desk choice. There are also monitor lift arms, which can mount a monitor at the right height for the individual

• the desk is not too deep, that reaching becomes an issue.

Ergonomic desks come in a variety of shapes – the normal rectangular, L shaped, curved front, rounded edges, split level and also with suspended keyboard tray. Height-adjustable desks also cater for work which is better done standing up e.g. looking at plans and pointing to information being discussed, or sorting information into folios or piles where, without that extra height, stooping would be necessary.

Working out what’s right for you may seem a bit of a challenge but, with the above information, you can see what ergonomics is all about. Like that suit or pair of jeans, you now know what you’re looking for.

Ergohuman – from Manufacture to Delivery

References are so important, aren’t they? Okay, they’re essential when applying for a job but they’re also important for many other needs.
In this moment, I’m talking chairs. Not just any chair but ergonomic office chairs. Technology in tandem with ergonomics have now produced many wonders in the office chair market but this doesn’t mean that every one of those chairs is going to be suitable for you. After all, we’re different shapes and sizes, different jobs demand different things from our personal frame and build and then there’s the other point of attraction. Yes, the ergonomic office chairs of today can be ‘very becoming (mine’s the Ergohuman Mirus)’ and so that ‘eye candy’ which normally applies to spotting good lookers might also apply to other items too. If the chair gives you that personal buzz, joining forces with it every day gives you a personal satisfaction and getting your head round the complexities of work feel naturally comfortable.

If I was ready to buy another ergonomic office chair, I would look for a supplier who could provide me with genuine references from purchasers of the models in which I was registering a personal interest. ‘Great’ may do little for me but to hear that a chair is a great piece of kit, that the user’s back clicked into place when using the chair correctly, or maybe even that someone is now feeling all-round benefits in both work and home life would make me look more into that particular office chair. I’d also be interested in feedback on the supplier and subsequent delivery time, a bit like those yellow stars you see against the details of well-seasoned Ebay sellers, telling you that they regularly come up with the goods and services expected when buying from strangers.
Me? I’d probably choose another Ergohuman Mirus, once again with mesh upholstery. Now that I know this chair and its adjustments can meet my personal needs, I might look at other chairs in the Ergohuman range e.g. the Nefil and the Ergohuman Plus, as this company, the supplier service and the delivery time, have already been proven to me. If I change anything, it would be the colour, as there’s a fantastic range to choose from.

I don’t need a new Mirus chair yet, as the Ergohuman range of chairs are very sustainable but I am going to treat myself to a footrest or a Office Chair with an intergrated Leg Rest, wow. Serving also as a leg rest when my chair is in a reclined position, this little added extra is going to heighten my pleasure during those laid back hours.
That’s me sorted … .

Work Life balance

Working practice has changed some much in the last 10 years from being mostly paper based to digital and computerized storage of documents. Finding data and cross-referencing information has never been easier. One example would be the police service using their new databases to solve crimes dating back 30 years or more. The example of computer power would be NASA or climate change scientists who have managed to harness the power of millions of computers through the internet to map the earth, weather predictions and more.
So what do you have in your office now?

The most obvious would be a computer, computer monitor, office desk, office chair and a pedestal. So how could you change the environment of the office to make it so people can enjoy their surroundings? The first is colours, having an office, which is bright, and vibrant creates an exciting dynamic happy office where as a dull office would be gloomy and sad. Some people also suffer from a condition known as SAD caused from deficiencies of natural sunlight light.
The workplace has been changing over the decades from office rooms, to partitions and cubicles, moving on to open space offices, and now going towards hot-desking areas used by executives with their own lap-tops. Even the home office users are on the verge of converging their home office with home living with new high-tech devices and trends such as integrated home cinema and home automation. Computer usage such as Internet and email is now diluted between mobile phones, iphones, blackberry, ipads, miniature laptops and giant desktops and is now making ground through our TV screens as some of the main Internet websites can now be browsed on your super thin / flat / sharp latest hd tv screen.
At the same time tv is also bleeding into the Internet ever directing us to a web-page after a program or prompting us to watch the next episode on the tv channel website. Everything is merging, tv , computer, mobile devices, telephones. Everything is converging, work life and home life. Everything is one: entertainment & communication. The telephone is now on the Internet with Skype and voice over IP, the music is now accessible on TV and on the Internet in the form of downloads. Games can be played equally on computers and play stations wired to your TV.
So in this ever-changing environment what will be the home office furniture of the future. As most of the information is stored digitally then one will have to be creative to adapt their home office even more than an office as they will normally spend more time there as they work from home. So if you can’t get away from it you need to improve it to be as versatile as our lifestyles.
The office chair will need to be adaptable to fill a number or roles and transform from a traditional office chair to a multi task, multi functional chair for the home office. Image will also play an important part as it will be the home office that you are proud of and not just what you were given by the management. An office chair will have to be convertible in a lounge chair or a game chair, a desk will need to be modular (adjustable and extendible) as well as mobile (desk with wheels) and ergonomic.
Any idea what tomorrow’s home office will look like?
So what will your ergonomic chair look like?
